Following are the various activities conducted by the Youth Commission of Shimoga

1. Leadership Training Programs for ICYM
The Yuvamithra organizes leadership training programs for the parish unit leaders at diocesan youth center. After the training elections are conducted for Diocesan Executive Council (DEXCO). There were 54 youth present for the training program on 10.06. 2016 at Cathedral Campus, Shimoga.  Most. Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ the bishop of Shimoga was the resource parson enthused the young with his dynamic talk. He shared his vision and dream for the youth of his diocese. He appealed the young to dream big and to be realistic. The regional Youth Director Rev. Fr. Marie Joseph addressed the youth with the topic “the ICYM is a Parochial Movement”. He said the youth need to be organized at the grass root level to be leaders at all levels. He also conducted the election for new DEXCO. The program ended with Holy Eucharist celebrated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Thoppil.

2. Health awareness program in the Prison by ICYM of Shimoga
The ICYM of the diocese of Shimoga had organized a health awareness program of the prisoners at Shimoga on 11 April 2016 in co ordination with the commission for prison ministry of the diocese of Shimoga. The program began with Inter Religious prayer service conducted by Fr. Ronald Veigas. The Jail superintendent Dr. Myageri inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp and addressed the jail inmates and thanked the Yuvamitra, the Youth Commission for organising the program.  The resource person Dr. Rudresh from Meghan Govt. Hospital explained about the various diseases during summer and rainy season and the precautions one ought to take to prevent sickness. Sr. Juliet from St. Charles Borromeo Convent, Bhadravathi was present for the program. Fr. Ronald Veigas the DYD, Mr. Alwyn the ICYM president and Miss Pearl Lopez, the Regional Rep of YCS and other members of ICYM conducted indoor games for the inmates. Mr. Saiyad a Muslim youth entertained the inmates with Rock singing. Mr. Alwyn delivered the vote of thanks

3. Leadership training program YCS/YSM
YCS/YSM is student movement and this movement is very active in the diocese of Shimoga. A Leadership training program was organized on 28-August-2016 for the parish and school unit leaders of Shimoga. There were 67 students participated in this training program. The program was inaugurated by Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ and Rev. Fr. Ronald Veigas in his key note address stressed to concentrate on the potentials each individual has and to draw strength and resource from it to build self and thus help others. Clacious Rodrigues the NEXCO of YCS/YSM conducted the group dynamics. The students DEXCO took charge of the entire programme. Rev. FR. David Dellario was the resource person of the day took a session on the History of YCS/YSM and the dynamics of the cell meeting. The diocesan President Sweeten Leema along with his team shared the responsibilities of the training program.

4. Review of Life Training Session
There were 7 “Review of Life Training programs” from June to November 2016 for the YCS units in the diocese. And those were at 1. Cathedral-Shimoga 2. Thirthahalli 3. Hosudi 4. Hosanagara 5 Bhadravathi 6. New Town and 7. Kable. The topics dealt were: 1) Group Dynamics 2) History of YCS/YSM Movement 3) YCS Methodology (See – Act - Judge – Evaluate) 4) Formation of Cells 5) Nature of YCS/YSM Movement.

5. Life Skill Training Program
A Life Skill Training Program was organized on 17-20, April - 2016 for the office bearers of various parish units at St. Francis Xavier School, Kable.  There were 94 young students from 12 parishes attended this training program.  Mr. Norbert Misquit, Fr. Ronald Veigas and Mrs. Celine D’Souza were the resource persons. The students were made aware of present realities around them and the innate power and resources each individual possesses. Through this unique program the students were motivated to introspect and have attitudinal change.

6. The Animators Training Programme
The Animators are the back bone of YCS/YSM movement. They accompany and animate the students and the student movement. In order to give them skills and resources the Yuvamitra had organized a  Training Program on 28-August -2016 at Cathedral Hall, Shimoga. The topics dealt were: 1) Group Dynamics 2) History of YCS/YSM Movement 3) YCS Methodology (See – Act - Judge – Evaluate) 4) The Role of Animators 5) Nature of YCS/YSM Movement.

Mr. Francis D’Cunha and Rev. Fr. Ronald Veigas were the resource persons. The input sessions and work shop were conducted to enable the animators to start YCS/YSM units in the Schools and Colleges. Model lessons or study materials have been provided to all the participants so as to facilitate animators to begin the cell meetings.

7. Live-in- Program
YCS/YSM is cell based movement where in each member of the cell group gets to know each other and a bond of relationship grows deep and strong. In order to facilitate this process the Student leaders are trained to conduct this activity and learn the dynamics of the movement. The diocesan cell group DTS (Diocesan Team of Students) gather once in every three months through this process and in turn they become the resource people.

 A Live- In program was organized on 27-August- 2016 for the DTS of Shimoga. The DTA came together as one family or cell to know each other and share their views, aspirations and feelings. They were accompanied by the DYD Fr. Ronald Veigas and Miss Cynthia Dias the former RTS (Regional Team of Students). The students were initiated to organize the program for the unit leaders of the diocese. The diocesan President Stephen Lobo along with his team prepared the time table and shared the responsibilities of the training program. They were guided to prepare a plan of action for the academic year in their tenure.

8. Village Exposure Program
YCS/YSM a student movement follows a unique methodology called Awareness – Reflection – Action – Evaluation.  A Village Exposure Program is hand in experience program for the students which exposes then to the realities of life and be aware of them closely. In view of facilitating this process village exposure program was arranged from 17-20, April-2016 at Kable, Hosanagara. There were totally 94 students participated in this event and benefited from this program.

Various resource persons dealt different student related issues on the basis of See-Judge-Act-Evaluate. Topics such as Media and students, Panchayathraj, Students and their civil rights, Positive relationships were thought provoking and informative. Students were given ample opportunities to have manual labour and learn from the village folk and village life style.

9. Swachata Andholan (Cleanliness Drive) and Street Play
Today’s youth are the tomorrow’s citizens. Awareness- Reflection - Action are keys to change self and change others. And the YCS/YSM believes that attitudinal change is only the way to build a new society/ Kingdom of God. The Diocesan Youth Commission had organized a Swachata Andholan program and a Street Play by the YCS/YSM students on 29th October 2016 at Shimoga. There were 650 Students who participated in the Cleanliness Drive followed by a street play in the city square.

10. Orientation and Training Programs
Youth Movement is a catechetical movement and it trains and accompanies the young with their life journey. Orientation and training programs are integral part of movement. Keeping in mind the dynamics of the movement the Yuvamitra the Youth Commission of the diocese of Shimoga conducts training programs in the parish Units. 12 parish Units have been visited by the Diocesan Youth Director during the year 2016.  The Orientation Program commences with a prayer song and then the youth are initiated into action songs and group dynamics. After the brain storming session on the topic “Who Am I and what do I gain from ICYM” They are initiated to draw up a yearly plan for parish unit prioritizing one-self, our-self and others.  The youth are also briefed up regarding the various activities the Yuva Mitra.

11. Taize Prayer Service
The Taize Prayer Services are integral part of the youth movement. There were 5 Taize Prayer Services conducted in various parish units. 1. Sharavathinagar, 2.Gopala, 3.Bhadravathi NT 4. Cathedral 5.  Youth Convention. During the prayer service the Sacrament of Confession was made available to all participants. The prayer service was concluded with an adoration of the Cross and final blessing.

12. NYC CROSS in Shimoga
In view of national youth convention scheduled to be celebrated on 19th to 23rd Jan 2017, in St. Joseph's engineering collage campus, Mangalore, a Cross has been travelling in different Diocese of Karnataka. Having travelled in different Diocese the Cross arrived on 18th Sep 2016 to St. Joseph's Church, Sagar, it was received by Yuva Mitra the youth commission of Shimoga Diocese along with the youth of Sagar Parish, on 24th Sep 2016 it's arrived to St. Lourdes Church, Thirthahalli.

On 1st Oct 2016 the Cross traveled to Sacred Heart Cathedral Church of Shimoga Diocese, and on 2nd Oct 2016 it will be handed over to Diocese of Bhadravathi. The THAIZE prayer service has been the hallmark of the event. Hundreds of youths blessed by participating in the event followed by Holy Mass

13. Diocesan Youth Convention 2016
Yuvamitra is the Youth Commission of the diocese of Shimoga had convened 5th Diocesan Youth Convention with the Theme: “Youth walk towards the God of Mercy” on 28th-30th October 2016 at Sacred Heart Cathedral Campus at Shimoga. There were 650 youth of ICYM, YCS/YSM and Don Bosco Youth actively participated in this event. This three day long Convention consisted of different activities like Teachings of the Church, Interactive Work Shops, Youth Masses & meditations, Awesome Music, Group Dynamics, Cultural Evening, Faith Walk, Youth Rally for Peace, Swatch Bharath Andholan and awareness program with Street play in Public Places.

The program was organized by ICYM and YCS/YSM diocesan office bearers under the able guidance of Most Rev. Dr. Francis Serrao SJ, the Bishop of Shimoga and Rev. Fr. Ronald Veigas the Diocesan Youth Director

14. The Youth Rally for Peace
Peace is one of the concerns of the world. Today more than ever before the warring hearts disturb the mind of the people. The youth of the world are the first targets of this evil. The formation of youth towards peace will take a long way in establishing peace in the world. Considering the above thought the Youth Commission of Shimoga is always striving and steering its efforts to foster peace in the minds of the young and spreading awareness through peace rally. The youth of Shimoga had organized a peace rally in the streets of Shimoga city on 29 October 2016. There were 1000 youth participated in this historic event.
